Kieran Trippier lauds reported Newcastle target James Maddison

Kieran Trippier has described reported Newcastle United target James Maddison as one of the best free-kick takers in the world, telling The Times that they may have to do rock, paper, scissors to decide who will take set-pieces for England at the World Cup.

Maddison was one of the players who forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s squad for the tournament. He has been in unbelievable form for Leicester this season.

Maddison has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 13 Premier League games. Without him, the Foxes would surely be in serious trouble in the league.

Unsurprisingly, Leicester may well face a battle to keep him beyond January. The Telegraph recently reported that Newcastle made two bids for Maddison in the summer, worth up to £40 million.

Eddie Howe is a big admirer, as is Dan Ashworth. And thus, Newcastle are weighing up making a fresh move at the turn of the year.

Someone who would surely love to see Maddison end up on Tyneside is Trippier. The right-back was discussing Maddison’s inclusion in the squad, as well as his ability from dead-ball situations. And he suggested that there are few better around right now.

“When you see Madders put up photos of when he was a young kid, he’s proud of probably the challenges he’s had in his whole career and what he’s sacrificed to make a major tournament, so full credit to him because he absolutely deserves it,” he told The Times.

“He’s probably one of the best in the world, Madders,” he adds, discussing his free-kick ability. “If we’re both playing and he wants a free kick, we’ll just have to do rock, paper, scissors on the pitch!”

Newcastle have to seriously consider pushing the boat out for Maddison in January.

They sit third in the Premier League and playing some of the best football around. They also have the means to make some seriously exciting moves in the window.

Ian Wright has suggested that they have to be considered title contenders. And there is a – albeit unlikely – world where they could be one point behind Arsenal by the time they meet at the start of January.

Signing players such as Maddison could be game-changing for the club. It should certainly help them take that next step.
