‘Surprises me greatly’: Vickery now believes Arsenal star is no longer in ‘pole position’ to go to World Cup

South American football expert Tim Vickery believes Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes might not go to the World Cup after being left out of Brazil’s latest squad.

Alongside their strong start to the Premier League season, plenty of Arsenal’s stars will have one eye on the World Cup.

Speaking to Off The Ball, Vickery discussed the World Cup prospects of Arsenal’s Brazilian contingent.

All three of Arsenal’s Gabriels – Jesus, Martinelli and Magalhaes – missed out on Tite’s latest squad.

This comes as a massive surprise, as Gabriel had been in Tite’s last squad, although he wasn’t given his debut.

Instead, Tite has called up Bremer and Roger Ibanez, who will be looking to take their opportunity this month.

It would be a massive shame for Gabriel to miss out on the World Cup, having been in contention so close to the tournament.

Gabriel might not go to the World Cup

Speaking to Off The Ball, Vickery said: “Gabriel Magalhaes, I was really shocked with.

“He’s been in and around the (Brazil) squad for a while without playing.

“I would have thought that these friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia would be the moment to give him a run out.

“Instead of which he’s been left out, and in for the very first time, come a couple of Italian-based players.

“One of those will certainly get a chance, and you can only conclude that Gabriel Magalhaes has lost his space, and is no longer in pole position.

“(This) surprises me greatly, because he is the only left-footed centre-back that they have.

“I thought before this squad that he was booked in for bed-and-breakfast.

“I now think he probably has a real struggle to go.”

Arsenal fans would be disappointed for their centre-back if he didn’t go to Qatar, but might see the bright side.

The mid-season tournament is going to cause plenty of disruption and there will be question marks over many players fitness.

Gabriel has been in great form for Arsenal, and arguably had his best game of the season against Villa before the squad announcement.

He was at fault for Aleksandar Mitrovic’s goal against Fulham, but impressed his teammates with how he bounced back.

Gabriel might not go to the World Cup as it stands, but still has two months left to impress his coach.
