Striker who got 62 caps for England says he genuinely could’ve signed for Leeds United at one point

Leeds United have had their fair share of transfer near misses over the years.

Indeed, Cody Gakpo nearly signed for Leeds before he went to Liverpool, while Jermaine Jenas could’ve signed for Leeds before he went to Spurs.

Now, it’s emerged that another England international around that time could’ve gone to Elland Road.

Speaking on the Beast Mode On Podcast, Emile Heskey has been discussing his career, and he says that once upon a time, he had the option to join Leeds United, while Spurs and Borussia Dortmund were also in for him too.

Emile Heskey could’ve signed for Leeds

Heskey spoke about making his move away from Leicester City.

The former England striker says he was always going to go to Liverpool due to the fact he was close to his uncle who was a Liverpool supporter.

However, the attacker noted that Leeds were also in for him around this time.

“Basically my uncle is a Liverpool fan. I have one uncle who’s a Man U fan and I have one uncle who’s a Liverpool fan and I was always with my uncle who’s a Liverpool fan. Yeah I followed them and when I knew they had come in that was it really. I had Leeds, I had Roma, I had Dortmund, I had Spurs and I had Villa. Yeah. but when I knew they (Liverpool) were in that was it really,” Heskey said.

Emile Heskey’s record vs Leeds

Heskey snubbed Leeds United to join Liverpool, and while the striker went on to become a 62-time England international, Leeds may not feel as though they missed out too much here.

Indeed, Heskey joined Liverpool in 2000, and, around that time, Leeds were signing strikers who were much more effective, for example, Robbie Keane, Mark Viduka and, eventually, Robbie Fowler.

Heskey was a solid striker, but he was hardly the most prolific, as his record against Leeds shows.

Leeds didn’t miss out too much here as the likes of Keane, Viduka and Fowler were arguably better for the Yorkshire club than Heskey ever would have been.
