'It's funny': 23-year-old World Cup star almost signed for Leeds United, now he's said to be worth £80m
Leeds were looking to bolster their attacking options during the previous transfer window and Andrea Radrizzani confirmed that they would try for Gakpo on deadline day.
The Whites’ director of football Victor Orta had already tried to sign the 23-year-old earlier in the window, with the Athletic reporting that he had flown out to Holland to try and secure a deal.
Of course, Gakpo ended up staying with PSV and is now viewed as one of the most exciting prospects in Europe after a brilliant start to the season.
The Dutch forward has already scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in just 23 appearances in all competitions. He’s continued this form into the World Cup as he’s bagged two goals in as many appearances for Holland.
And now Dutch legend Ronald de Boer says he’s probably worth around £80 million after almost signing for Leeds.
Gakpo almost signed for Leeds
Speaking to Sky Sports, De Boer spoke about Leeds’ interest and raved about Gakpo’s incredible form.
He said: “It’s funny. Before the season started, PSV could sell Gakpo to an English club, Leeds United, for a lot of money.
“But PSV said no we’ll wait because we’re going to play Champions League and they got kicked out by Rangers.
“I thought there goes the money, bad management they said because they lose a lot of money. Now they kicked out the technical director because of that, not only that, but he’s out – John de Jong.
“Now, I think he must be sitting there thinking ‘Gakpo is worth £80 million now, so why am I sitting at home?’
“Talking about Gakpo himself, he’s a great quality youngster. He has speed, which is important nowadays, and dribbling. But most importantly he has a great shot, he’s directly to the goal and he finds the net quite easily.
“I think he’s a great person. Very down to earth and I love him as a football player and as a person.”
Leeds completed some great business over the summer, with the likes of Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson impressing at Elland Road.
Wilfried Gnonto is also proving to be an exciting young talent after getting his chance in the first-team before the World Cup.
But Marsch will undoubtedly have regrets over missing out on Gakpo, especially after witnessing his early-season form.
The forward is now being tracked by some of the biggest sides in the Premier League, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all said to be interested.
It seems unlikely that Gakpo will be heading to Elland Road anytime soon and they may have missed their chance now, with the Dutchman making a name for himself on the world’s biggest stage.
