‘Striker dream is dead’: Some West Ham fans angry at Tuesday club announcement

West Ham announced on Tuesday that Michail Antonio is taking the number nine shirt in the new season – and some Hammers fans on Twitter are angry because they are convinced it means they won’t sign a new striker.

The Hammers revealed that Antonio will be swapping from the No30 to the No9 kit in the 2021/22 campaign.

Antonio has been a versatile star throughout his West Ham career due to the fact he’s played as a full-back, winger and striker. However, it looks like he’s now being recognised as the frontline centre-forward.

The 31-year-old has lead the line more regularly in the last couple of years. He’s scored 20 goals in 50 Premier League appearances across the last two seasons, but injury problems often disrupt him.

West Ham fans shocked no new striker has been signed yet

West Ham have versatile attackers that can fill a central void if needed. Jarrod Bowen, along with Said Benrahma, have been used in the middle a few times.

Unfortunately, Antonio is the only real option in the current squad that can lead the line as a focal point. That makes his regular injury problems a major concern.

There is still a good amount of time in the window for any business to happen. It looks like the patience of West Ham fans is running thin, though.

They feel it’s imperative they bring in a new option in attack, especially as they play in Europe this season.
