‘Still dreaming’: Fabrizio Romano says Leeds really want to sign ‘special’ player in January

Leeds United already have one eye on the January transfer window, despite their recent struggles.

Manager Jesse Marsch will be hoping he’s still in charge when that rolls around, but the club will be preparing regardless of who’s in charge.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on one of Leeds’ main transfer targets.

The Whites are really struggling in front of goal right now, and Marsch may be looking at further reinforcements.

One player Leeds nearly got over the line in the summer was PSV winger Cody Gakpo.

He had started the season well in the Eredivisie when Leeds made a bid to sign the Dutchman.

However, he remained at PSV and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Gakpo is now one of the in-form players in Europe and his goals and assists tally this season is incredible.

The 23-year-old already has 12 goals and 13 assists in all competitions, so it’s no surprise Leeds still want to sign Gakpo.

However, Romano warns that Gakpo may now be looking at moving to even bigger clubs when he finally leaves PSV.

Leeds still want to sign Gakpo

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano delivered an update on Gakpo.

“In the final week of the transfer market, Southampton and Leeds tried to sign Cody Gakp,” Romano said.

“The night before deadline day, Leeds already had a private jet waiting for Gakpo to fly from Holland to England to have his medical. Everything was ready.

“Leeds were closing on the deal, but it collapsed.

“Leeds tried to keep the deal open for January, and are still dreaming of (signing) Cody Gakpo, but the situation has completely changed.

“Now, the feeling around the player and PSV Eindhoven is that Gakpo will not end up at a club like Leeds or Southampton.

“It’s probably going to be a different level (of club). Top, important clubs around Europe, and England especially, are monitoring Cody Gakpo.”

The ‘special’ winger now knows he’s got the World Cup to truly showcase his talents.

Already teams above Leeds in the table are starting to take a look at Gakpo.

A report from Sky journalist Dharmesh Sheth suggests that Arsenal could make a move for him in January.

Romano also reported that Manchester United are still keen on the 23-year-old.

Leeds are going to have to pull out all the stops if they still want to sign Gakpo.

It would be an incredible coup and could potentially secure their place in the Premier League.
