Manchester United aren’t in the best of positions right now.
Indeed, after winning just one of their first four Premier League games, the Red Devils sit in the bottom-half of the table.
Ruben Amorim is under pressure, and things aren’t looking too good for the former Premier League giants.
However, as dour as the present looks, the future could be bright at Old Trafford.
Indeed, United have a few exciting young players coming through, Chido Obi looks like a talent, while Ayden Heaven appears to be a brilliant player.
Perhaps the jewel of Manchester United’s academy crown at the moment is Kobbie Mainoo, and speaking to Goal, Steven Gerrard has made an interesting claim about the midfielder.

Steven Gerrard picks Kobbie Mainoo over Archie Gray
Gerrard was asked to choose between a number of top Premier League midfielders as a part of a TikTok challenge for Goal.
As you can imagine, Gerrard had some difficult decisions to make during this challenge, and, at one point, he was asked to pick between Kobbie Mainoo and Archie Gray.
Gray is seen as a top young talent, but according to Gerrard, at this moment in time, Mainoo is the better player.
Of course, this is an argument that is bound to stoke discussion, but, overall it’s fantastic that England have two young midfielders who are top players at such young ages.
England’s young midfield options
Whether you prefer Gray or Mainoo is largely down to personal preference, but the reality is that this could, one day, be England’s first-choice midfield pairing.
Indeed, the Three Lions have tons of brilliant young midfield talents coming through right now, and these two could be a pair of the very best.
| England’s young midfield options | Age |
| Kobbie Mainoo | 20 |
| Archie Gray | 19 |
| Jude Bellingham | 23 |
| Adam Wharton | 21 |
| Lewis Miley | 19 |
| Jobe Bellingham | 19 |
| Chris Rigg | 18 |
Depending on how England line up, Jude Bellingham could be a shoo-in in this midfield for a decade to come, but Gray and Mainoo have a strong case to make for partnering Bellingham in a few years’ time.
Gerrard clearly rates Mainoo as a player, and, he may well follow in Gerrard’s footsteps by becoming a key player for England.
