Steve Bruce has finally left Newcastle by ‘mutual consent’ on Wednesday morning – prompting reaction from Michael Chopra and Micky Quinn.
Bruce, 60, was expected to be sacked last week following a £305million takeover. But he remained in charge for the clash against Tottenham.
The owners gave Bruce the chance to manage his 1000th match, which ended in a 3-2 home defeat to Tottenham. It was his 97th as Toon boss.
In those 97 games, he won just 28 times – with Newcastle fans consistently voicing their frustration at his style of play, and lack of tactical awareness.
In a recent poll, 95% of Newcastle fans wanted Bruce out and eventually – the new owners have decided that enough is enough.
The club announced on Wednesday morning that Bruce and the new owners had mutually agreed to part ways. Quinn and Chopra reacted.
Chopra and Quinn react: Who will replace Bruce at Newcastle?
The current favourites include out-of-work trio Lucien Favre, Paulo Fonseca and Eddie Howe. But plenty of others have been linked.
Steven Gerrard at Rangers is an option, while Wayne Rooney has ruled himself out of the job – committing himself to Derby County on Tuesday.
Frank Lampard is another potential appointment. But realistically, it will be a manager that knows he is not the long-term answer at St. James’ Park.
Howe, Favre or Fonseca are likely to be the front runners, but a week is a long time in football. Graeme Jones is set to take over against Palace.
