‘Squad player’: Pundit says Reds target wouldn’t make Anfield XI as Liverpool reportedly eye £30m move

Jose Enrique insists Adama Traore would only be joining Liverpool as a squad player if he moves to Merseyside.

Traore, 25, is a lightning fast attacker who plays for Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to the Daily Star, Jurgen Klopp’s side are eyeing a potential £30million swoop to bring him to Anfield. The report says Liverpool feel they can land a cut-price deal after being quoted £60million for him 18 months ago.

Pundit Enrique isn’t convinced the Wolves right-winger could become a key player at his former club. However, he acknowledges the powerhouse forward brings something different.

“The Daily Star report Liverpool could be set to ready a move for Adama Traore, but I don’t think it makes a lot of sense,” Enrique wrote for Empire Of The Kop.

“I don’t think he’s an upgrade on [Xherdan] Shaqiri, but maybe he could bring a new dimension to the team because of the type of player he is.

“He’s quick, he’s strong, but I don’t think he’s better than, let’s say, Diogo Jota.

“But Adama, as a squad player, I would take him at Liverpool – not for the £30million the Star are quoting, but he can come on for the last 20-30 minutes and offer attributes no one in the world has, that’s the reality.”

Adama Traore is a mystery player

Enrique’s assessment of Traore contradicts itself, but that’s understandable when discussing a player who blows hot and cold.

He’s spot on that he could be an amazing option off the bench at Anfield. However, it’s difficult to see him improving the XI right now.

Wolves fans have been pulling their hair out over him because so often his final ball lets him down. He’s got raw pace and super dribbling that strikes fear into defenders, but he rarely backs it up with end product.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp may be the perfect manager to help him given his track record improving wingers, so maybe £30million is worth a gamble.

These next few years are so decisive in Traore’s career to see if he can step up to the top bracket.
