Spurs transfer news: Leeds star on Conte radar deemed one of his club's 'biggest high-potential players'
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Leeds United star Illan Meslier in recent months.
Speculation linking Spurs with the Elland Road goalkeeper emerged during the summer transfer window.
Ahead of the January transfer window, Tottenham were linked with Meslier once again.
TEAMtalk reported that Spurs were eyeing the 22-year-old as a potential successor to Hugo Lloris.
The 36-year-old’s Tottenham contract runs until the summer of 2024.
While it’s not massively urgent, Spurs shouldn’t waste any time in scouting a replacement for the France legend.
Meslier was very much thrown in at the deep end for Leeds.
He made his Premier League debut two-and-a-half years ago, against then reigning champions Liverpool, at just 20 years of age.
Meslier has already clocked up over a century of competitive appearances for Leeds.
And he continues to get better, with Whites boss Jesse Marsch saying as much earlier this week.
“Illan for me has made major progress,” Leeds Live quotes Marsch as saying.
“I’ve challenged him to be more well rounded in all moments, like a quarterback.
“I think we’ve seen a lot of growth and seen his ability to make saves and get big results.
“I think his potential is massive, I think he’s one of our biggest high-potential players. He’s alright.”
New Spurs goalkeeper for the next 15 years?
Meslier is a good shout for Tottenham with regards to signing Lloris’ successor.
At just 22 years of age, he has over 100 appearances for Leeds, including 90 in the Premier League.
He’s a tall, imposing and skilled goalkeeper, his ceiling is high, and is a great professional.
It’s not uncommon for goalkeepers to play into their late 30s.
In Meslier, Spurs could well get themselves a goalkeeper for the next 15 years or more.
However, given how important Meslier is to Leeds, they surely won’t make it easy for any suitors.
