Spurs target Mikkel Damsgaard lauded after Denmark win
Spurs fans would be forgiven for wondering what may have been with Mikkel Damsgaard following his latest performance for Denmark during the international break.
It was reported in mid-August that Tottenham were one of the teams leading the race for the 21-year-old.
Obviously however, the window would close with Damsgaard still at Sampdoria.
But he has done his best to show everyone why they may have missed a trick not making a move.
His performance in the 2-0 win over Scotland last week was lauded by a number of Spurs fans. The display included one delicious assist.
And he has stolen the show once again it seems.
Denmark have one foot at next year’s World Cup after beating Israel 5-0 on Tuesday. And Danish outlet BT have given Damsgaard’s performance a 6/6 rating.
They suggested that the youngster has taken on the Christian Eriksen role.
“The diamond Damsgaard has taken on Eriksen’s role as Denmark’s creator and offensive focal point with an almost Laudrup’s touch,” BT reported.
“It is not always that the 21-year-old upstart succeeds with his high-pitched game, but when he does – as up to the 1-0 and 3-0 goal – it is pure football magic.”
Could Damsgaard prove to be the Eriksen replacement Spurs are still looking for after Denmark display?
One of the players Tottenham fans feel has not been replaced in North London is Eriksen.
The Dane left in 2020. And there is yet to be a player to really fill his void.
So Damsgaard’s performance for Denmark must be catching the eye of those at Tottenham given the previous links.
He probably needs to prove that he can do that more often for Sampdoria also. He only has two goals and four assists in Serie A since the start of last season.
But he is clearly a special talent. And it should come as no surprise if Spurs reignited their interest in the near future.
The problem for Tottenham is that they are unlikely to be the only ones.
