It was suggested by the Daily Mail during the January transfer window that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in Nice’s £20 million-rated midfielder Wylan Cyprien.
Of course, a move would not take place. And it would appear that there were plenty of Spurs fans who would have been disappointed to miss out on the 25-year-old, with several taking to Twitter to express their excitement about the links.
Tottenham would strengthen their midfield options in January. Giovani Lo Celso’s loan was converted into a permanent deal, while Gedson Fernandes arrived on an 18-month loan.
Nevertheless, following the latest reports concerning Cyprien, perhaps Jose Mourinho would be wise to take another look.
The Chronicle has reported that Newcastle and Everton are both interested in the Nice star, who has scored seven Ligue 1 goals this term.
And Spurs should make sure that they do not miss out when the window opens.
Tottenham have arguably not scored enough goals from midfield this term. The likes of Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura have contributed, but the large majority of their goals have come from further up the pitch.
Without those three, Spurs’s highest scoring midfielders have two Premier League goals each this season.
Some Tottenham fans may be wary of backing a move for Cyprien. Tanguy Ndombele has struggled since arriving from Ligue 1 last summer.
But there were plenty who felt that he would be an inspired signing in January. And perhaps reported interest from two of their Premier League rivals should spur Mourinho into action this summer.
