Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni suffered a knee injury in the Reds’ Carabao Cup win over Southampton on Tuesday night.

The Liverpool summer signing was bright on his debut for Arne Slot’s side, impressing fans and looking like a real star in the making.

However, Leoni sadly went down in the latter stages of the match and, after being tended to on the pitch, was carried out on a stretcher.

Fabrizio Romano has now taken to social media with a report on how long Leoni is set to be on the sidelines.

Giovanni Leoni set for ‘several months’ on the sidelines due to ‘torn ACL’

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Giovanni Leoni has torn his ACL and will be out for “several months”, as per his latest post on X.

The transfer insider also said that Leoni would be working hard to be back before the end of the season.

“After excellent debut in League Cup last night with also Arne Slot very happy, an unlucky injury for Leoni who will try to be back before the end of the season,” wrote Romano.

What Arne Slot had said about Giovanni Leoni injury after match

Slot, speaking to the Liverpool media team after the 2-1 win over Southampton, confirmed that Leoni would be undergoing tests to determine the severity of the issue.

Worryingly, the Dutchman appeared downbeat about the situation.

“Of course, he is down because for him it didn’t feel good immediately, but this is something now we have to assess,” said Slot.

“Normally these things don’t happen in five to 10 minutes and you have to wait for tomorrow to see how he comes in and then maybe do an MRI scan to know more about how serious it is.

“Normally the emotions of a player tell you a lot… let’s hope for the best.”

Leoni is a wonderful talent who Italian legend Arrigo Sacchi described on Gazzetta dello Sport as “gritty”, “physically strong” and capable of “splendid” performances.

It’s a real shame to hear that Leoni could be out for months – fingers crossed he makes a swift and full recovery.
