‘Special’: Declan Rice says ‘extraordinary’ player Newcastle spoke to Premier League side about this summer plays just like Harry Kane
Toney has got off to a brilliant start at Brentford this season and has scored five goals in seven appearances in the Premier League.
The ‘extraordinary’ Toney has even earned his first call-up to the England squad ahead of the World Cup in November.
But a move never materialised and Eddie Howe brought in Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.
And now Rice has compared Toney to England captain Harry Kane after the Brentford man linked up with the Three Lions squad.
Rice says Toney plays like Kane
“From the moment he stepped foot into the Premier League, he’s took it by storm really,” Rice said.
“If you look at what he does for Brentford, how consistent he is, what he does for his team, it’s fully deserving of a call-up.
“He’s kind of like Harry Kane in a way, where he’s not only an out-and-out striker, he’s a playmaker as well.
“His left foot and right foot passing and the way he picks stuff out for his teammates is a special technique to have.
“He’s fully deserving of being here and I’m really looking forward to playing with him.”
It’s certainly high praise for Toney to be compared to Kane, who is arguably one of the best strikers in the world at the moment.
Newcastle fans won’t be too disappointed in missing out on Toney after Isak’s brilliant start under Howe.
The England new-boy played for the Magpies between 2015 and 2018 but was sent out on loan several times.
Toney completed a switch away from Newcastle to Peterborough United and is now making a huge impact in the Premier League for the Bees.
