Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside that Newcastle United have made initial contact over a potential move for Ivan Toney, but face paying at least £45 million for the striker.
The Magpies are definitely one team to watch in the final weeks of the transfer window. Eddie Howe has been able to strengthen his options at the back. However, they do appear to be incredibly light up front.

That will surely change before the deadline passes. Reports this week claimed that they had made a bid for Jack Harrison. And it seems that they are also working on landing a new goalscorer.
Romano was discussing the speculation that Manchester United want Toney. And while he insisted that there was little in the links with Old Trafford, he did suggest that the Brentford star’s former club had been in contact.

“Despite what you may have read, Manchester United have not submitted any proposals for Ivan Toney so far,” he told Caught Offside.
“Newcastle have had contacts in recent weeks but there is still no advanced negotiation. Brentford want at least £40-45m to sell Toney and the situation may evolve in the coming weeks.”
Newcastle make contact over Ivan Toney move
It would be a surprise if Toney left the Bees before the window shut. He has proved himself in the Premier League. Thomas Frank described the forward as a ‘special‘ player.
But Newcastle fans may be divided over the possibility of bringing Toney back to Tyneside. He would become the club’s record signing if he moved for the figures Romano has spoken about.
He did do well last season. But Newcastle would want more than 12 goals if they were to part with such a sizeable sum to bring him to St James’ Park.
There are options outside of the Premier League who surely represent better value. But Newcastle may value his experience in England’s top-flight as they weigh up signing a new striker.
