'A huge one': Fabrizio Romano says Southampton now in talks to sign 'extraordinary' player Arsenal wanted in July

Southampton are closing in on a big deal to bring in Wolfsburg defender, Maxence Lacroix, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Lacroix was initially a target for Arsenal back in July but no deal ever materialised. However, it is now Southampton who look to be making a late move to sign Lacroix before the deadline passes tonight.

The 22-year-old French defender will be just what Saints boss Ralf Hassenhuttl wants as he looks to add quality to the ranks before midnight tonight. Lacroix will bring that quality, albeit Romano claims the deal will not be an easy one to get fully over the line.

Southampton have been linked with a number of new faces on deadline day already. A move for PSV’s Cody Gakpo appears to have collapsed, but the club are working hard on signing new players beyond that.

Lacroix was targeted by Arsenal in the summer as they had reservations over whether William Saliba would come back to the club and play. Of course, Saliba has since returned and been superb, while Lacroix has been impressing over in Germany as well.

Southampton will hope to get the deal over the line as Hassenhuttl looks to improve his squad before tomorrow.
