Gabriel Agbonlahor has given his verdict on speculation linking Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier with Bayern Munich.
The former Aston Villa striker and talkSPORT pundit is bemused at rumours that Trippier could leave Newcastle in the January transfer window.
So, what has Gabriel Agbonlahor said about Kieran Trippier? Let’s take a look.
Gabriel Agbonlahor comments on Kieran Trippier rumour
Well, Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich in the January transfer window.
The Guardian has reported that Bayern have had an initial offer for Trippier turned down.
The reigning Bundesliga champions, who recently signed Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur, will make a new bid for former Spurs right-back Trippier.
The Guardian has reported that the 33-year-old England international right-back is “keen to play for Thomas Tuchel at Bayern”, but he “does not intend to force a move through”.
Former Aston Villa striker and talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has given his verdict on the rumour.
The pundit does not understand why Trippier would want to leave Newcastle for Bayern and is bemused by the speculation.

Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT (6:38 pm, January 20, 2024): “Seems odd, doesn’t it? Kieran Trippier to Bayern Munich? It has been reported that he is open to the move.
“Captain of Newcastle, looks like he is happy there, something doesn’t add up here, mate. Is there something else we don’t know about?”
The pundit added: “This doesn’t look right. Your captain, Newcastle should be coming out and saying, ‘No chance’. And he shouldn’t want to leave the project Newcastle have got going on.
“Something’s going on. 33 years of age, he is going through a tough spell, but you are the captain.
“Why would you want to leave and go to Bayern Munich with the project that Newcastle have got? Doesn’t make sense to me.”
My View: Bayern Munich hugely appealing for Kieran Trippier
I fully understand why Kieran Trippier would be keen on a move to Bayern Munich.
Bayern are one of the biggest and most historic clubs in the world who are aiming to win the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League this season.
Yes, Newcastle are a big club as well and are lofty ambitions under owners Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), but Bayern are used to winning major trophies year after year. The Magpies are not at that level yete.
I think that any player, and not just Trippier, would find a transfer to Bayern very appealing.
Meanwhile, former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood does not think that Trippier will leave Newcastle in January.
Sherwood said on Sky Sports News (20/01/24 at 2:25 pm), as transcribed by HITC Sport: “I don’t think he would go. Why would you let him go because he isn’t going to bring you a lot of money?
“They are going to need to sell players. They are going to need to sell Bruno Guimaraes or an Isak.
“They don’t want to lose any of them, but what are Bayern going to pay for Kieran? It’s going to be nothing really in the scheme of things. It’s not going to help their financial fair play situation, so they need to be selling Guimaraes.
“I wouldn’t sell this boy. He is a leader. A top, top draw player. Even though he makes mistakes, you know that he is a genuine character.”
