‘Somebody very reliable saying’: Journalist claims Newcastle could sign ‘top quality’ centre-back by Monday

Newcastle United have experienced a rollercoaster January transfer window, to put it mildly.

The Magpies began the month brightly by signing Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Since then, Newcastle have struggled somewhat to get a third signing over the line.

However, multiple reports have been claiming Bruno Guimaraes is on the verge of joining.

One story that dragged on and is now seemingly finished is the Diego Carlos to Newcastle saga.

At the last count, the Magpies bid £30m for the Brazilian, but Sevilla wanted around £38m.

Newcastle reportedly didn’t want to pay that much and subsequently decided to look elsewhere.

“The offer was a very good offer, very respectable, not at the best possible time,” Monchi told BBC Sport.

However, that might not be the end of it, according to some reports.

According to the Northern Echo, Toon officials believe Sevilla’s Carlos stance will ‘crumble’ before Monday’s deadline.

And now, journalist Alex Crook has claimed that the deal is “not totally off the table”.

Speaking to GiveMeSport on Friday, he said: “I got a text this morning from somebody very reliable saying that Diego Carlos is not totally off the table.

“So maybe there could be some twists and turns on that one.”

It’s been the kind of transfer window that a lot of fans will be glad it’s over.

So far, it’s been okay for Newcastle, and if they get Guimaraes over the line, it’ll have been great.

There have been reports that Eddie Howe could bring in a left-back next, amid links with Mitchel Bakker and Rogerio.

Admittedly, the Carlos to Newcastle saga dragged on and, for many fans, they just wanted to see the back of it.

But until the transfer window shuts – and even then announcements still come through until the following day – anything’s possible.

Carlos is, in Kaveh Solhekol’s words, a “top, top quality centre-back”, and no doubt he would be an incredible signing for Newcastle.
