'Progress is being made': Sky journalist claims Newcastle are closing in on 'top, top quality' £40m star

Newcastle United are reportedly making good progress in their pursuit of Diego Carlos.

The Magpies have done well in landing Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood over the past fortnight.

Now, it looks as though Newcastle are hoping to land a top-quality centre-back.

The Magpies are in a Premier League relegation battle, so it’s crucial for them to bolster their ranks.

But with the might of the Saudi PIF behind them, money is not much of an object for the Magpies.

Carlos is one of the best defenders in La Liga, a key player in a Sevilla side just five points off top spot.

And according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol, negotiations are heading in the right direction.

“Diego Carlos’ potential transfer to Newcastle is moving in a positive direction,” he said. “It is not done, but positive.

“He is a top, top quality centre-back.

“He’s been very impressive at Sevilla and people were talking about would he want to go from Sevilla to a club that are in the relegation zone in the Premier League.

“But I think the player himself is open to coming to Newcastle. I think he would definitely want to move and it looks like some progress is being made.”

Could Newcastle double Carlos pay packet?

A report on Thursday claimed Newcastle could potentially double Carlos’ wages should he move to St James’ Park.

According to ABC Sevilla – via Sport Witness – Newcastle are hoping to tempt the Brazilian with a lucrative offer.

Salary Sport claims Carlos is currently on £40,000-a-week, so Newcastle could potentially offer him £80,000-a-week.

In terms of how much the Magpies could have to pay for him, 90Min reports that Sevilla want over £40million.

If the Magpies can land Carlos, they’d have a truly world-class defender at their disposal.

He has made 118 appearances for the Spanish club. He has won the Europa League and Olympic gold medal, and has his club within reach of La Liga’s summit.
