Some Sunderland fans excited by new contract for O'Nien
Some Sunderland fans were left excited after the club revealed Luke O’Nien has signed a new contract.
The 26-year-old has signed a new three-year deal to keep him on Wearside until the summer of 2024. His old contract expired at the end of the last calendar month.
O’Nien was a pivotal figure for the Stadium of Light outfit last season, making 38 League One appearances.
He proved an incredibly versatile player for the club, appearing in four different positions. He played on the entire right side of defence and midfield.
The Englishman was close to a move to Hull City, however, the Tigers couldn’t offer him a higher salary.
Sunderland start their season at home to Wigan Athletic.
TBR View: Securing a new contract for O’Nien a boost for Sunderland
His performances last season were brilliant, hence the interest from the Championship.
However, Sunderland have received a boost amid news O’Nien has signed a new contract. Retaining a key part of Lee Johnson’s defence will only boost the bid for promotion.
The loss to Lincoln City in the League One play-off semi-finals make it a fourth consecutive season in the third tier.
Sunderland will be looking to return to the second tier and O’Nien is joining them on the journey.
