Some Newcastle United fans were reacting after Miguel Almiron limped off with an injury during Paraguay’s Copa America tie.

The £42k-p/w Geordies midfielder left the field in tears after suffering what looked to be a serious hamstring injury.

Paraguay were defeated 1-0 by Uruguay and will face one of Ecuador, Colombia or Peru in the next round.

Almiron has been in great form for his country during the Copa America. He scored and assisted in the 2-0 win over Chile last week, helping Paraguay qualify for the quarter-finals.

There was speculation over his future after the player’s comments over his status at St James’ Park. However, he moved to distance himself from a departure from the northeast.

The injury suffered by Almiron could prove detrimental for Newcastle in the transfer market.

Steve Bruce is already targeting a move for a central midfielder, preferably Joe Willock.

The Paraguayan’s injury, if serious, could force the 60-year-old to look at strengthening in attack.

It will prove a hammer blow for the Geordies, who have just £50m available to spend on transfers this summer.

Bruce will be bemoaning his luck as the outfit face an anxious wait over the fitness of the 26-year-old.
