Sol Campbell has responded when asked if he would take the Tottenham Hotspur job on TalkSPORT (Wednesday, 9:40AM). Campbell is hardly the most-popular figure at Tottenham – having left the club to join Arsenal in 2001. He opened the door for what is a very unlikely move to Spurs.

Campbell is the subject of what is one of the most controversial transfers in Premier League history. Having played for Tottenham for nine seasons after his debut in 1992, Campbell clocked up 315 outings for the North London club. But he made a shock move to Arsenal, on a free transfer.

His move came after numerous public assurances he would stay at Spurs – but ultimately, he moved in order to play in the Champions League. He went on to win two Premier League titles with Arsenal and became a part of the Invincibles. Now, he is a manager, and Tottenham need one.

Spurs are back to square one, after moves for Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso all fell through. Campbell has spells at Macclesfield and Southend under his belt, the latter of which were relegated under his watch. Asked about the Spurs job, he said: “I don’t know, who knows?”

Tottenham manager news: Campbell has no chance of Tottenham job, surely?

The backlash from fans has become more and more powerful recently. Fans of clubs in the Super League saw the top six re-think their decision. Then, a move for Gattuso was met with backlash and that was thrown in the bin. It is not hard to predict what fans would think about Campbell and Spurs.

He was verging on iconic status at Spurs. Certainly, he was a fan favourite. But his move to Arsenal made him public enemy number one. Spurs fans have not recovered and a move to Spurs would cause massive backlash. Even if he was a top manager, Tottenham would surely avoid Campbell.
