‘So crazy’: Darko Gyabi now shares what shocked him when he signed for Leeds United

Leeds United fans haven’t seen much of midfielder Darko Gyabi yet.

The 18-year-old midfielder made the move to Elland Road from Manchester City for £5m, with Kalvin Phillips going the other way.

He certainly had some big shoes to fill, but Gyabi was very much signed with the future in mind.

Gyabi has been an unused substitute four times in the Premier League without making his debut.

He did play 90 minutes in the EFL Cup against Wolves, with Jesse Marsch naming a very young side.

They fell to a 1-0 defeat, but it was a well-earned reward for Gyabi who has been excellent for the under-21s.

Michael Skubala’s side are currently top of their league, with Gyabi playing a key part in their success.

Speaking to Leeds Live, Gyabi has now spoken about his experience when he joined Leeds this summer.

The 18-year-old was very taken aback by the welcome he received when he arrived at Elland Road.

The central midfielder has bags of potential, and that’s also been recognised at international level.

Gyabi has worked his way through the England age groups, and has already captained the under-19s.

Marsch has made a habit of giving Leeds’ young stars plenty of first-team opportunities.

Crysencio Summerville has scored a number of important goals already this season.

Sam Greenwood and Wilfried Gnonto have also impressed when called upon.

Gyabi’s opportunities have been limited by Marc Roca and Tyler Adams this season.

Both players are also new arrivals, and have been impossible to shift from the team.

Adams only enhanced his reputation with some fantastic performances for the USA at the World Cup.

Gyabi has now said he was shocked at how welcoming the first-team were when he first joined Leeds this summer.

“So crazy it was so welcoming,” Gyabi said.

“When I first came I wasn’t really expecting it because they’re all first-team established, but they were so welcoming showing me around the training ground.”
