'Wonderful' 18-year-old Leeds United youngster has been given captain's armband by his country this afternoon

The international break may be winding down, but some Leeds United players are still in action.

Leeds’ impressive academy mean many of Jesse Marsch’s younger players are involved with under-21 and under-19 squads.

Two players involved with England under-19s are Sonny Perkins and Darko Gyabi.

New manager Simon Rusk called the pair up as England look to defend their European Championship title.

Gyabi and Perkins were both involved in the first two fixtures in this international break.

Perkins scored a brilliant hat-trick against Georgia, carrying on his impressive form from Leeds’ under-21 side.

The under-19 side take on Denmark this afternoon, looking to win their eleventh game on the bounce this year.

And Rusk has handed the captain’s armband to Gyabi for England’s final qualifier.

Gyabi to captain England under-19s

Leeds will be encouraged by the extra responsibility handed to Gyabi.

The central midfielder joined Leeds from Manchester City in the summer for around £5m.

He was handed the number 18 shirt and joined the Leeds first team on their pre-season tour of Australia.

Gyabi was a promising player at Man City, but never came close to playing for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The opportunities handed to young players at Leeds may have been one of the convincing factors in Gyabi coming to Elland Road.

His move went slightly under-the-radar given he was part of the deal with saw Kalvin Phillips move to the Etihad.

The ‘wonderful’ 18-year-old has plenty of time to make an impact at Leeds, and has already put in some food performances for the under-21s.

A successful international campaign will only help convince Jesse Marsch to give Gyabi his Leeds debut.

Gyabi wearing the captain’s armband for England will also do him no harm in proving he’s an exciting player to watch.
