'I'm excited': Sky Sports pundit says Tottenham could be about to make a brilliant signing in defence
Tottenham are being linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender, Piero Hincapie, and Sky Sports’ Tim Vickery has suggested he’s an exciting player.
Reports this weekend have claimed that Hincapie is the latest name to make the list of potential Spurs signings this summer. Antonio Conte is seeking out a new left-side centre-back, with Hincapie among a number of players who seem to tick the boxes for the Italian.
Hincapie, who is still just 20, has developed quickly since moving over from South America to the Bundesliga. And according to Sky Sports’ Tim Vickery – who specialises in South American football – Spurs fans can be excited about the prospect of seeing Hincapie.
“This is another one where I’m delighted to be proved wrong. He’s first choice for Ecuador, left-sided centre back and brings the ball out from the back very well. If you’re going to play three, two must play the ball out of the defence. When he came through in the Ecuador team, I thought no. During that Copa America he was making howlers every game. But you have to make mistakes as you develop,” Vickery commented.
“He moved from Ecuador to Argentina and played very well in the Bundesliga as well. I would be a little bit worried about a lack of physicality. Wind would blow this player over. But I’m excited by his prospect.”
Hincapie can play both left-back and centrally, something which will appeal to Conte and Spurs. Other names, such as Alessandro Bastoni and Josko Gvardiol, are also being considered.
TBR’s View: Hincapie A Good Option For Tottenham To Consider
And that’s all Piero Hincapie should be at the moment for Spurs, an option. He doesn’t have the experience or quality needed right now to be a real game-changer for Conte.
Sure, down the line, Hincapie might produce the goods and become one of the best around. But Conte needs someone to step in right now and improve the XI. Question marks remain around if Hincapie is that man.
Leverkusen are thought to value Hincapie around the £34m mark.
