'Signed his contract': Fabrizio Romano has exciting news for Spurs fans
Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Spurs have completed the signing of Emerson Royal.
Tottenham have been heavily linked with the Barcelona defender in recent days.
And over the past few hours, speculation has picked up pace, suggesting Spurs were closing in on his signature.
Now it looks as though Nuno Espirito Santo will soon have the Brazilian right-back at his disposal.
Earlier today, the Sky Sports live transfer feed reported (31/8/21, 09:25am) that Emerson was having his medical in Barcelona.
Romano has since taken to Twitter with an update that suggests all that’s left now is for Spurs to make an official statement.
The Gunners were also linked with Emerson just last week.
David Ornstein claimed in The Athletic that Arsenal were ready to swap Hector Bellerin for one of two La Liga right-backs.
One of those was Emerson, and the other was Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier.
Likewise, Spurs have been linked with Takehiro Tomiyasu for most of the summer.
Now, it looks as though the Japan international is going to Arsenal.
Spurs set to sign Emerson Royal – the story so far
Emerson was born in Sao Paulo in 1999 and played for several clubs at youth level before coming through the ranks at Porte Preta in 2016.
He made his debut in 2017 and, the following year, joined Brazilian giants Atletico Mineiro, making 23 league appearances.
Emerson was on the move again in 2018 when Barcelona came calling.
As part of a joint deal between Barca and Real Betis, the 22-year-old would play for the latter club first, for two seasons.
The Blaugrana held the option of buying him outright for €6million (around £5.2million) in 2021, which they recently took up.
Emerson was a regular for Manuel Pellegrini last season and helped Betis reach the Europa League, providing 10 assists in the process.
