Alan Shearer has told The Athletic that the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane must be in dreamland playing alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, as he named the Liverpool star as the one current Premier League player he would love to play alongside the most.

Alexander-Arnold has been in absolutely outstanding form so far this season. The 23-year-old is already into double figures for assists in all competitions.

In fact, Salah is the only player to have provided more in the top-flight so far this term. Alexander-Arnold set up Andy Robertson for his eighth in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham before Christmas.

He has silenced any doubters who appeared to relish any dip in form he has previously endured. And when asked to pick which current Premier League player he would want to play in the same team as, Shearer suggested that the Liverpool man would get the nod.

“Kevin De Bruyne hasn’t played so much this season, so I’d say Trent Alexander-Arnold,” he told The Athletic. “His deliveries from the wing, from set pieces, the positions he gets into, the quality of his crossing and his passing are all absolutely superb. To be in that Liverpool team must be dreamland for Salah, Mane and Diogo Jota.”

Dealing with Trent Alexander-Arnold only part of the problem when coming up against Liverpool

It is frightening to think about how far Alexander-Arnold could go. He is rapidly approaching his 200th appearance for the Reds. And he only turned 23 in October.

Remarkably, he has already brought up his half-century for assists. He averages exactly a goal or assist every three games for Liverpool during his career to date.

It is an absolutely unbelievable return. But it is also worth noting that 16 different Liverpool players have provided an assist in the Premier League already this term. So trying to contain their two full-backs does not come close to nullifying the full threat Jurgen Klopp’s men provide.
