Shearer has praised Cristian Romero after Tottenham beat Leicester

Alan Shearer has praised Cristian Romero, telling the Premier League website that the Tottenham Hotspur defender produced two huge challenges in the build-up to their second goal against Leicester City on Sunday.

Spurs kept the pressure on Arsenal in the race for the top-four with a 3-1 win over the Foxes at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Son Heung-min scored twice after Harry Kane broke the deadlock with a header.

Obviously, Son and Kane are doing all they can to get Antonio Conte’s side across the line. But there have also been a number of players who have stepped up in recent months. And Romero is certainly one of those.

The Argentinian has been absolutely superb for much of the campaign. And he was excellent against Leicester.

Only Ben Davies completed more passes for Tottenham than Romero, according to Whoscored. Meanwhile, he made three interceptions and five clearances.

And crucially, Romero won three tackles. Two of those came in the build-up to Son’s first goal. Son praised Romero after the victory.

And Shearer has now suggested that he was hugely impressed by what he saw from the centre-back.

“His influential display was typified by two huge tackles that led to Son Heung-min’s first goal. Helped turn the tide of the match Spurs’ way,” he told the Premier League website.

Tottenham will be delighted that they decided to sign Romero in the summer. Some at Barcelona were apparently desperate for Tottenham to sign Romero ahead of themselves.

That stance is coming back to haunt the Catalan giants. The Argentinian has been remarkably good, and the fans clearly love what he brings to the side.

It is almost frightening to think of the player he could become. It really does appear to have the potential to be an absolutely game-changing deal for Spurs in the years to come.

And there may be plenty more to come should Conte’s side get themselves that fourth spot in the Premier League this season.
