Seamus Coleman claims that he’s noticed Everton teammate Ben Godfrey grow as a leader during this summer’s pre-season schedule.
Everton, who kickstart their Premier League campaign on Saturday at home to Southampton, are under new management for the 2021/22 season.
Rafael Benitez is the man in the dugout and he’s got the big task of trying to win over Toffees supporters who are refusing to forget his Liverpool connections.
The Spanish coach is someone renowned for organising teams that are defensively solid, so Everton’s defenders should be excited working under him.
Everton’s 32-year-old club captain Coleman looks in pole position right now to start at right-back. Meanwhile, Godfrey will hope to nail down a starting centre-back role.
Coleman has said that he’s noticed £20million teammate Godfrey continue to grow during the summer as a leader.
It was a superb debut season last year for the 23-year-old at Goodison Park following his Norwich City transfer and he just missed out on the England squad for Euro 2020.
He’s someone that is stepping up all areas of his game, according to his club captain.
“Yeah, I do,” Coleman responded when asked if he views Godfrey as a future Everton leader.
“I see him as a leader in the future without a shadow of a doubt. I think he’s a fantastic player, he’s a fantastic professional. He’s got some amazing attributes.
“He is already a leader I can see it growing even at the start of this pre-season compared to the start of last pre-season because we’d just signed him. But the way he played for us last season he was outstanding… He can be captain one day at this football club.”

Godfrey can be Coleman successor as Everton captain
For Godfrey, he needs to build on last year’s strong season.
He’s an athletic centre-half with amazing pace and strength, so can be an Everton regular for years to come.
There is no doubt that he’s got the authority and vocal presence to be a leader on the pitch, but credit from Coleman is massive praise.
Benitez needs to make him an ever-present in his XI because it sounds like his importance is growing both on and off the pitch on Merseyside.
His £20million transfer could turn out to be genius.
