Manchester United have sorely missed a playmaker sitting at the base of midfield.
Not since the days of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick have Manchester United owned a natural orchestrator in the middle of the pitch, someone who can take the ball from the backline and dictate play from deep.
However, this type of player could soon be arriving at Old Trafford, with Manchester United now working on a deal to sign Javi Guerra from Valencia.
Manchester United on alert as Javi Guerra rejects new contract at Valencia
Marca in Spain now state that the 22-year-old has rejected the offer of a new contract at Valencia, which has put Manchester United on red alert.
The Spanish news outlet believe the Red Devils are now actively working behind the scenes to sign Guerra, and are willing to offer €25m (£21.7m) to open the bidding.
Valencia are keen to receive at least €27m (£23.4m) for the Spain U21 international, as his former club Villarreal are owed 30% of the sum due to a sell-on clause.
Guerra – who Arsenal looked at in 2023 – has already entered the final two years of his contract, so if a deal fails to materialise this summer, Valencia would most likely have to accept an even lower fee in 2026, or risk losing the central midfielder for nothing in 2027.
The Gilet-born wonderkid made 36 appearances in La Liga last season, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
Ruben Amorim could soon have his own Xabi Alonso
As aforesaid, Manchester United lack a No.6 who can bring an element of control to the midfield.
However, the Valencia No.8 could be the answer to this problem.
Guerra has actually been compared to Xabi Alonso of all players, which is a testament to how well the Spaniard has marshalled the midfield for Valencia since making his debut in April 2023.
It was Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout who made the comparison, labelling the Valencia wonderkid as a player who can boast impressive passing skills, vision, technique, composure, tackling and athleticism as his best traits.
Another talent could follow Guerra to Old Trafford, with Manchester United expected to bid for Senne Lammens – a top goalkeeping prodigy currently starring for Royal Antwerp.
