Romano suggests Spurs could sign midfield star who’s ‘better than Pogba’ for around £60m

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in recent weeks.

Now, Fabrizio Romano – writing on CaughtOffside – has provided an update on the Serbia international.

According to La Lazio Siamo Noi, Spurs duo Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are ‘crazy’ about the 27-year-old.

Tottenham could well be making wholesale changes in midfield this summer.

Spurs sold Dele Alli and offloaded Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso on loan in January.

Harry Winks’ future at N17 is also uncertain, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reportedly on Roma’s radar.

That makes a new central midfielder an absolute necessity for Tottenham over the close season.

And in Milinkovic-Savic, they’d be getting one of the best midfielders in European football.

As well as Tottenham, the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with him.

Last year, there were also links between Liverpool and Milinkovic-Savic.

“One of the most underrated midfielders in the world”

Romano claimed that Lazio haven’t received any offers for Milinkovic-Savic, but stressed that several top clubs are watching him.

The Italian also shared his personal opinion on the player, deeming him a perfect replacement for Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.

“In Italy, there have been rumours for years about Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain but no offers have ever arrived from these two clubs.

“PSG chief Leonardo has been an admirer of Sergej for many years.

“While Manchester United have sent their scouts to follow him several times again this year but so far there are no negotiations underway.

“Lazio would like at least €70-75m (£60m-£63.5m) for Milinkovic-Savic.

“It could be a really interesting deal as Milinkovic is one of the most underrated midfielders in the world, in my opinion.

“He has double figures for goals and assists in Serie A this season. And you can see how he could be ideal to replace Paul Pogba at United, for example.”

“He will one day contest the Ballon d’Or”

Former Chelsea and Serbia striker Mateja Kezman represents Milinkovic-Savic.

The now-retired footballer turned agent has always had great things to say about his client.

In one interview from March 2018, he talked up Milinkovic-Savic, tipping him for superstardom.

Kezman told Mozzart Sport: “When Sergej arrived in Italy there were comparisons with Paul Pogba.

“I think that now Milinkovic-Savic has some different qualities that are better than Pogba.

“In these past six months, he has made enormous progress and has the possibility to become the best in the world in my opinion.

“He reminds me of Zinedine Zidane sometimes and there are certain things he does that you cannot see on the television.

“For me, he can become better than Arjen Robben and Frank Lampard, and will one day contest the Ballon d’Or.”
