Fabrizio Romano has told The Here We Go Podcast that Liverpool are so happy with Ibrahima Konate and remain convinced that he is going to be a star of the future at centre-back.

The Reds made a big statement ahead of the final months of last season. Ultimately, it was announced in May that they had triggered the Frenchman’s £36 million release clause.

It has not been an easy start to life on Merseyside for Konate. He is yet to start three Premier League games in a row, only featuring seven times in the top-flight.

There have certainly been glimpses of what he can do. Remarkably, Liverpool have won 13 of the 15 games he has played in. And they are yet to lose.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has previously claimed that he could become a ‘once-in-a-generation‘ player. And Romano has suggested that those behind the scenes at Liverpool remain convinced that they did the right thing bringing Konate to Anfield.

“Liverpool are super happy with Ibrahima Konate, this is important to say,” he told The Here We Go Podcast. “Because one year ago, in this period of the year, they decided to jump into this opportunity and to anticipate Chelsea paying the release clause for Ibrahima Konate.

“They are super happy with Konate. And they are sure that they have the centre-back for the future.”

Konate will know that his time at Liverpool will come

It would be interesting to know which centre-back pairing Jurgen Klopp expected to lead the way this season. Obviously, there were no surprises to see Virgil van Dijk reestablish himself as a key man.

But few would have predicted how good Joel Matip would be this term. He has been a revelation alongside van Dijk throughout the campaign. Joe Gomez has barely had a look-in since his own return from injury.

With that in mind, Konate may not have expected to be a regular starter immediately anyway. He will be aware that he is not yet the finished article at the very highest level.

But he only turns 23 in May. So he has more than enough time to move himself up the pecking order and live up to expectations.
