Fabrizio Romano has told The Here We Go Podcast that Liverpool are getting closer to agreeing a new contract with James Milner – but added that another English club has approached him about a move away.

Milner has proved an incredible signing for the Reds. He has now made 275 appearances for the club following his arrival from Manchester City. That is a remarkable return given that he moved to Anfield as a 29-year-old.

Understandably, Jurgen Klopp is using Milner a little less these days. He has started seven times in the Premier League this season. Nevertheless, he remains a key player amongst the squad.

Klopp has already confirmed this month that he wants Milner to stay next season. And Romano has now suggested that the Reds are making progress in talks with the former England international.

Interestingly, he added that another club from England has made their move in the hope that they can convince Milner to leave Liverpool.

“For Milner, they are progressing in talks. So it is not fully agreed yet. But for James Milner, Liverpool are getting closer to an agreement to extend until 2023, so one more season,” he told The Here We Go Podcast.

“For Milner, some English club is approaching him to ask him if he wants to try a different experience. But now, Liverpool are still pushing to have Milner signing a new contract.”

Which clubs could try and lure James Milner away from Liverpool?

In truth, there are not too many clubs who would reject the chance to take Milner on a one-year deal next year. He is a player who sets the standard away from the pitch. Micah Richards labelled him ‘world-class‘ earlier this season, reflecting on everything he brings to Liverpool.

But there are some obvious contenders for who may have made an approach. Certainly, some Leeds fans would love for their club to have looked at the possibility of an emotional return to Elland Road.

But his other former clubs may be in the running also. Eddie Howe is looking for leaders at Newcastle, having signed Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier. And the Magpies clearly have the funds to rival whatever Liverpool put on the table.

And Steven Gerrard may want him at Aston Villa. They signed then-35-year-old Ashley Young previously, while Gerrard has already signed one former teammate in Philippe Coutinho.

Like Newcastle, they arguably need more leaders in their ranks. So perhaps it should not be a surprise if any of those former clubs tried their luck in the hope that they can convince Milner to leave Liverpool.
