Romano: Liverpool attacker strikes agreement to join new club, but price is still not agreed
Fabrizio Romano claims that Lyon and Xherdan Shaqiri have found an agreement over a deal to take the Liverpool star to France this summer. However, the Italian journalist states that a deal is still far from completion – with the two sides yet to agree a fee for the 96-time Switzerland star.
Shaqiri, 29, is expected to leave Liverpool this summer. The Premier League winner is in the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield. Injuries have limited the former Bayern Munich star to just 63 appearances in three seasons. Lyon are showing the most interest, and it seems Shaqiri is keen.
Earlier this month, a report from The Athletic stated that Lyon were struggling to meet Shaqiri’s £12million price tag. While Romano now says they have an agreement with the player himself – despite his £80,000-a-week (Spotrac) contract – the two clubs are yet to find a compromise.
“Liverpool need to sell players before signing new players. For Shaqiri and Lyon, they have been in negotiations but there is still no agreement. Shaqiri has an agreement with Lyon but there is still no agreement with the clubs. So let’s see what happens,” Romano told his Here We Go podcast.
Romano on Shaqiri: Lyon right to lower Liverpool asking price
Liverpool are running out of time to bring in some cash for Shaqiri. With his contract up, the next couple of weeks represents the final time in which they have to sell him. Otherwise, he can sign a pre-contract agreement in January – or go for nothing next summer. Liverpool cannot be stubborn.
While Liverpool value Shaqiri at £12million, if Lyon bid anything between £8million and £10million then they need to accept his sale. Otherwise, they might have to hold onto Shaqiri – continuing to pay his wages.
