Romano asked if he could see Arsenal signing James Maddison

Fabrizio Romano has suggested that he is not convinced that James Maddison will move to Arsenal this summer, insisting that the Gunners have other priorities – in an interview on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.

Maddison has been linked with a move to the Emirates for some time now. Certainly, it seemed that there was a good chance that they would land either the Leicester City star or Martin Odegaard.

Ultimately, it was Odegaard who moved to the Emirates, signing permanently following his loan spell. And the Norwegian has enjoyed a very impressive first full season as an Arsenal player.

Interestingly, that does not appear to be the end of the story concerning the Gunners and Maddison. Recently, reports claimed that Arsenal are back in the race to sign the 25-year-old. He is reportedly valued at £60 million.

Romano has now been asked whether he could see Maddison going to Arsenal if they finish in the Champions League places in the Premier League. But he hinted that it seems unlikely.

“I’m not sure. Last summer, there were a lot of rumours about this one. But their priority had always been Odegaard. So I’m not sure that it will be the priority. I’m sure that they will have different kinds of priorities, like striker, for sure, midfielder, they have other positions to cover,” he told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.

Maddison is a ‘sensational‘ player. He has scored 13 goals and contributed nine assists in all competition. And he has been directly involved in 51 goals in 126 games in the Premier League.

But, as Romano notes, Arsenal have much bigger concerns. They need a striker, a new central midfielder, and greater depth in a few other areas.

They probably do not need to spend £60 million on Maddison.

Perhaps it is something that could come up later in the summer. But signing Maddison may not sit well with supporters if it harms their chances of strengthening in other areas.
