Romano asked if Conte could try to sign Lukaku for Tottenham
Fabrizio Romano has told Rio Ferdinand that he cannot rule out the idea of Tottenham Hotspur signing Romelu Lukaku in the future, with Antonio Conte in love with the striker.
Lukaku is seemingly facing an uncertain future at Chelsea. He is continuing to struggle to silence his critics with his form at Stamford Bridge. It seemed somewhat ominous that he was an unused substitute for their Champions League tie with Lille on Tuesday.
It is a surprise to see how far the Belgian has fallen over the last 12 months. Of course, he was part of the Inter side that clinched the Scudetto last season, scoring 24 goals and providing 10 assists in Serie A.
The man who led Inter to that league title last year was Conte. In their two years together, Lukaku managed at least 30 goals in all competitions in both campaigns.
That prompted Ferdinand to ask whether Romano could see a scenario where Tottenham target Lukaku should Kane end up leaving the club. And while he suggested that it was doubtful, he admitted that it cannot be ruled out either.
“It would be huge. I can’t say no at the moment because we are still in February so we have to keep everything open. But I can tell you talking about Lukaku that of course, Antonio is in love with Lukaku,” he told Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.
“He thinks Lukaku is the best number nine in the world, maybe together with Harry Kane because he’s really loving the impact of Harry Kane. But Antonio is in love with Lukaku, so he would love to work one day again with Romelu. But I think it’s not going to be easy for Tottenham to pay what Chelsea would ask for for Lukaku.”
Tottenham may be the last club Chelsea sell Lukaku to
Chelsea would surely relish the opportunity to offload Lukaku in the summer if they are offered a significant sum. It has not been a move that has worked out for anyone.
Having said that, there is surely little chance of the Blues letting Lukaku join Tottenham. There would be nothing more embarrassing for Chelsea than Lukaku impressing at Tottenham, and under Conte no less.
It is clear just how good he can be when everything clicks. Thomas Tuchel previously suggested that he is a ‘world-class‘ striker. Chelsea obviously, broke their club-record to bring him back to Stamford Bridge for £97.5 million.
Tottenham would surely be wise to ask the question if Conte tells Fabio Paratici that he wants Lukaku. But surely, surely, this is one move that is highly unlikely.
