Robbie Fowler noticed Liverpool do something very unusual during 1-0 defeat vs Plymouth

Liverpool suffered a shock defeat at Plymouth in the FA Cup on Sunday.

A penalty from Ryan Hardie in the 53rd minute sealed a stunning result for the Pilgrims, who currently sit bottom of the Championship while Liverpool top the Premier League.

Arne Slot opted to name a weakened side including the likes of Trey Nyoni and James McConnell – not even selecting Mohamed Salah or Cody Gakpo for the bench – and the Dutchman was made to pay.

Plenty went wrong for Liverpool at Home Park on Sunday – but Robbie Fowler has pinpointed the one thing he found very strange about how the Reds performed.

Robbie Fowler baffled by Liverpool’s lack of intensity in possession

Ever since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp, we have seen Liverpool play some scintillating football, specifically when it comes to quick counter-attacks.

However, this slick style of play was nowhere to be seen against Plymouth, which left Fowler – who said he fell out with Gerard Houllier – bemused.

The man who scored 183 goals for Liverpool told ITV: “The intensity in which they moved the ball was very un-Liverpool.”

In truth, Liverpool hardly threatened Plymouth aside from the final 20 minutes, when the Reds needed to throw the kitchen sink at the Championship strugglers.

Had Liverpool shown this urgency in and out of possession since the first whistle, we highly doubt this shock result would have happened.

Arne Slot makes (unwanted) history at Liverpool

Liverpool do not often suffer defeat in the fourth round of the FA Cup, let alone to opponents in lower divisions.

In fact, Liverpool have not lost to a club residing in a lower division while leading the table since 1984, so Slot, who looked visibly annoyed, has made a bit of – unwanted – history in losing to Plymouth.

We can understand why the 46-year-old rested his star men, with five more games to come in February alone, although it unquestionably bit him on the backside down at Home Park.
