Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli can become a Luis Suarez-type player if he manages to stay fit throughout this season.

The young Brazilian has had a fantastic start to the campaign. He scored in each of the Gunners’ first two games of the season, the latest of which was a really impressive strike against Leicester City in Arsenal’s 4-2 win on Saturday.

Martinelli is a phenomenal talent, everybody knows that.

The youngster joined Arsenal from the fourth-tier of Brazilian football and took the English game by storm. He was sensational in his debut season, and he has started this campaign brilliantly as well.

Ferdinand is thoroughly impressed by Martinelli, and he predicted that the 21-year-old could become a Suarez-type player for Arsenal if he manages to stay fit this season.

He said on Vibe with Five: “Martinelli, if he stays fit, this guy, I’ve told you this before what Arteta told me, he could be the next Suarez-type player.

“Even Brendan Rodgers, I was interested in Brenden Rodgers’ comments, he said that Arsenal have gone up a level with their additions, so it looks positive with you guys.”

After Martinelli’s debut season in the Premier League, everyone expected him to become a superstar. However, injuries have really troubled him.

Since joining the Gunners back in 2019, the young Brazilian has missed 197 days and 38 games of football due to injuries. That’s one of the biggest reasons why his numbers don’t look incredible, but it seems like he has now put his woes behind him.

Martinelli looks incredible. He has been excellent in each of Arsenal’s two games in the Premier League, and alongside someone like Gabriel Jesus, he can surely take his game to the next level.

Arsenal take on Bournemouth this weekend and Martinelli is expected to keep his place in the starting XI.
