Report: Tottenham signed 'exceptional' player instead of Chelsea, Antonio Conte was key in negotiations

Tottenham have improved their squad no end this summer and one of the key additions was Brazilian striker, Richarlison.

The former Everton man has made a good start to life as a Spurs player and has forced himself into the starting XI in recent weeks. A number of crucial goals have seen him keep his place as well, although a return to form for Heung-MIn Son is likely to see either Richarlison or Dejan Kulusevski miss out in the next game.

However, things could have been so different for both Tottenham and Richarlison. Reported by Goal this weekend, it’s claimed and confirmed by the striker himself that both Chelsea and Arsenal had tried to sign him in the summer. However, the Spurs newboy says a conversation with Antonio Conte swayed his decision and luckily for him, both clubs managed to get the deal done.

Dubbed an ‘exceptional‘ player by Owen Hargreaves for his performance against Marseille in Europe this season, Richarlison will be hoping he can stay on the goal trail when action returns next week. Certainly, he’s kept himself in form, scoring twice for Brazil this week.

In fairness, Richarlison would have improved Chelsea a lot so it’s easy to see why the Blues might have fancied their chances in signing him.

However, he looks very much at home as a Spurs player as well and there is confidence at the club that he can go on to become a huge success this season.

The fact he mentions Conte shows the pull the Spurs boss has as well. Conte has been a massive coup for Spurs and if that sort of conversation can happen with future signings, then the future is bright for Tottenham.
