Report: 'World class' player Tottenham apparently bid for last week will be available on a free next summer
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Memphis Depay in recent weeks, but the Athletic reports that the Barcelona forward will leave the club for free next summer.
Despite reports suggesting that Xavi has told Depay to leave or sit on the bench next season, it seems the Dutchman is going to bide his time. He simply doesn’t want to leave.
Spurs have reportedly already made an offer for Depay as the club continue to bolster Antonio Conte’s squad ahead of the new season.
The Barca man has been dubbed as ‘world-class’ but the 28-year-old faces being frozen out at Camp Nou after the signings of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.
Depay will be available for free next summer
The Dutch international has no intention of seeking a move during the current window, despite falling down Xavi’s pecking order.
Potential suitors for the Barca man will also know that he’ll be available in just a year’s time for no fee.
Depay joined the Catalan club last summer on a free transfer after an impressive spell at Ligue 1 outfit Lyon.
The forward earned the move after eye-catching displays during the Euros for Holland and has performed quite well at Barca. He finished as the club’s top goal scorer last season as he scored 13 times in 38 games.
Whether or not Depay will be forced out of Barca before he intends to remains to be seen and Fabrizio Romano said he would ‘keep it open’ in terms of a summer move to Spurs.
Tottenham have already added Richarlison to their squad this summer after his move from Everton. The two players occupy very similar positions in the frontline so the move may not make sense for Conte at this time.
But if Depay was to be available on a free next summer, it could be an opportunity that Spurs revisit. If the Barca man does become available for no transfer fee though, he will have plenty of clubs interested in him.
