Report: £17m man now handed fierce warning by manager after Tottenham launch bid for him

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay this summer.

Spurs transfer guru Fabio Paratici had reportedly already made an offer for the Dutchman last week despite reports suggesting he isn’t keen on the move.

And now AS Sport reports that Barcelona have told Depay to leave the club or sit on the bench next season.

The Catalan club have already signed Robert Lewandwoski and former Leeds man Raphinha this summer and it appears that Depay is now set to be frozen out at Camp Nou.

Barcelona have told Depay to leave

AS reports that Depay has been told to leave the club by boss Xavi Hernandez or he will spend the whole season on the bench.

Xavi apparently held a conversation with the 28-year-old and was brutally honest with the forward.

Barca are open to listening to offers around the £17m mark and are conscious that his contract will expire next summer.

The Catalan club are reportedly aware that there is potential for the Dutchman to join a Premier League club.

Spurs could yet sign Depay this summer

Fabrizio Romano recently said he would ‘keep it open’ and that Spurs could yet move for Depay before the window closes

However, reports have also suggested that Depay has rejected a move to Tottenham this summer

The Dutch international finished as Barca’s top scorer last season as he netted 13 goals in 38 games. But after the arrival of Lewandowski from Bayern Munich, he faces an uphill task to remain in Xavi’s side.

The La Liga giants have also renewed Dembele’s contract on top of their new signings so despite the fact that Depay can play across the front-three, it will be difficult for him to remain a regular starter.

And if Xavi has told Depay to leave, it may be for the best if the Barca man finds a new club this summer. At the age of 28, Depay is now entering his prime years and it would be a shame for him to waste a season on the bench at Barcelona.

But if he were to join Spurs, he could face the same predicament in North London. Antonio Conte already has Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski , and the trio performed brilliantly together last season.

Tottenham have also signed Richarlison from Everton and the Brazilian occupies similar positions to Depay. So, it may not be a move that makes sense for him or Spurs.
