Report: Woodman on standby to be Newcastle number one for Premier League start

Freddie Woodman is on standby to start the season as Newcastle United’s number one goalkeeper.

What’s the story?

According to The Athletic, Steve Bruce is hesitant to let the 24-year-old leave due to the club’s current situation.

The Geordies find themselves without a recognised number one. Martin Dubravka is currently recovering from foot surgery.

The Slovenian had been suffering from the issue since last year’s pre-season and aggravated it at Euro 2020.

Meanwhile, Karl Darlow has only just been released from hospital after suffering badly from Covid-19.

Woodman was due to have a medical with AFC Bournemouth earlier in the month. However, the loan deal has been postponed indefinitely.

Newcastle accidentally stumble on the quality of Woodman

It is funny how certain situations play out.

Last season, everyone was treated to 10 months of excellent performances from Woodman.

The ‘brilliant’ Croydon-born ace was in fine form for the Welsh side, keeping 21 clean sheets in 48 Championship games.

However, it is clear Bruce didn’t notice his quality as he prepared to let him leave on loan.

Now, Newcastle could accidentally stumble on the quality of Woodman as he is made number one.

Whether by luck or not, you can’t say a chance for the first-team isn’t deserved for the ace. But he must grasp the opportunity with both hands as he looks to impress everyone associated with the club.
