Wolves are reportedly interested in hiring former Olympiacos manager Pedro Martins to replace Bruno Lage.

The Ahletic have reported that Wolves are interested in Martins after sacking Lage on Sunday.

Lage had overseen just one win in Wolves’ last 15 Premier League matches.

Wolves suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers West Ham that pushed them into the relegation zone.

The West Midlands club are now on the search for a new manager, and could be set to continue their Portuguese trend.

Martins has managed a number of sides in his native Portugual, including Maritimo, Rio Ave and Vitoria SC.

He finally left his homeland to move to Olympiacos, and spent four seasons in Greece.

Martins was sacked by Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis in the summer.

But not before winning four major honours with one of Greece’s biggest clubs.

Wolves interested in Martins

There are several names being linked with the Wolves job, but none of them have the connection to the club Martins already has.

Martins managed Jose Sa and Daniel Podence during their time in Greece.

Both players have previously said that Martins is ‘ready’ to manage in the Premier League.

“Of course he is ready, although Olympiacos is a great club compared to most teams in the Premier League.” Podence said, via Record.pt.

“The quality that exists here will not be a problem for him and he will have good results.

“He’s prepared for that and for big flights. He deserves what he’s done all these years at Olympiacos.” Jose Sa added.

Podence also believes Martins is a great manager for improving players, which will be necessary at Wolves this season.

Lage struggled with getting his players to score goals, but hasn’t been helped by injuries.

Raul Jimenez is unavailable again, while new signing Sasa Kalajdzic tore his ACL 30 minutes into his Wolves debut.

Diego Costa has returned to the Premier League to help solve Wolves’ striker issues, and needs to hit the ground running.

Everton were previously linked with another forward, Hwang Hee-chan, although he’s not a prolific goal scorer.

If Wolves’ interest in Martins is acted upon, he’ll need to turn things around quickly.

Otherwise clubs will begin sniffing around Wolves’ best players – such as Pedro Neto – in January.
