Report: Wolfsburg eye Donyell Malen, amid Liverpool interest
Reported Liverpool target, Donyell Malen, could be on his way to Wolfsburg this summer as Mark Van Bommel eyes replacements for Martin Weghorst.
That is according to Goal, who claim that Malen and PSV teammate, Myron Boadu, are both on Van Bommel’s watchlist, should Weghorst leave.
Coincidentally, Weghorst has been linked with a move to Liverpool, as well as Spurs. The striker is seen as one of the hottest properties in the Bundesliga, after scoring 25 times this season.
Malen, meanwhile, is said to be on the radar of a number of clubs, including Liverpool. As covered by TBR previously, 90Min have previously claimed Malen is on Jurgen Klopp’s list of potential targets this summer.
The 22-year-old PSV man is expected to play a key role for Holland in the Euros this summer. He’s scored 27 times in all competitions over the course of the campaign, cementing himself as one of the Netherlands’ top talents.
Liverpool may want Malen, but they do now face competition. New Wolfsburg boss Van Bommel knows the likes of Malen and Boadu from his days at PSV. It makes sense, then, that the former Dutch international plans a raid on his former club.
Donyell Malen would be great for Liverpool but Wolfsburg could have upper hand
This always happens in football, doesn’t it? A manager takes over at a club and is immediately linked with some of his tried and trusted.
In fairness to Malen, he probably is ready to move on from Holland. He’s already proven himself, and a new challenge would probably do him good.
For Liverpool, it would mean getting in there early if they are serious about signing Malen at all. Van Bommel is bound to have the upper hand, given his PSV links, so any move needs to be quick.
If Malen did sign for the Reds, they’d be getting a fine player. Goals, pace, and potential, all things the 22-year-old would bring to the fold.
