Report: Wilder wants Dwight Gayle if he joins West Brom

Chris Wilder plans to make a move for Dwight Gayle should he get the West Brom job, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (30/5; page 76).

The Baggies are yet to confirm who will succeed Sam Allardyce at the Hawthorns. But it would appear that one of the candidates is considering who he may look to sign if appointed.

According to the Mirror, Wilder is interested in bringing Gayle back to the Baggies if he gets the gig.

Like Wilder, there is plenty of uncertainty surrounding Gayle right now.

Celtic strike Premier Sports deal - is this the "additional value" we've been waiting for?

The Sunday Mirror (30/5; page 76) reports that he is out of contract with Newcastle United this summer. However, the £10 million striker was offered a three-year deal before Easter.

It is yet to be confirmed whether Gayle will stay on Tyneside, despite previous reports claiming that he had agreed terms.

And should he become a free agent and Wilder end up at West Brom, a return to the Hawthorns could perhaps be on the cards for the forward.

Gayle should take gamble and make West Brom move if offered chance by Wilder

It may be difficult for Gayle to reject a three-year deal with the Magpies. He turns 32 in October, so he will be aware that he may not have many more chances to play at the highest level.

However, perhaps he would indeed be better off rolling the dice and heading to the Hawthorns – if Wilder is appointed.

He was hardly a regular starter in Steve Bruce’s side. And if Callum Wilson can enjoy a little more luck with injuries, he is likely to feature even less.

Gayle was superb on loan at West Brom a few years ago. And given their striker issues, he should certainly have an opportunity to stake a claim for a regular spot.

The Baggies should also be one of the favourites for promotion next year – particularly if they appoint Wilder.

So perhaps a move out of the Premier League this summer may actually boost Gayle’s hopes of playing regularly in the top flight in the future.
