Report: Dwight Gayle signs new Newcastle contract

Dwight Gayle has agreed a new contract with Newcastle United, with The Athletic reporting that he is set to stay until 2024.

Gayle’s future had been up in the air heading into the summer. As noted by The Athletic, his previous deal on Tyneside was set to expire at the end of the campaign.

He has appeared 11 times in the Premier League this season. However, he had only made two starts for the Magpies in the top flight. Meanwhile, he had only scored once.

Nevertheless, it appears that Newcastle have decided that they want the 31-year-old to stay.

The Athletic reports that Gayle has agreed a three-year extension on reduced terms. According to Spotrac, he was on £40,000-a-week.

TBR View: Gayle contract an underwhelming decision

You could understand if Newcastle fans were completely underwhelmed by the reports. Steve Bruce does not have a large group of lethal strikers to pick from. But it is still a questionable decision.

Gayle will be 34 by the time this new deal ends. And he is a player who has not managed to reach double figures in a single Premier League campaign throughout his career.

The fear for fans will be that this decision has been made with a potential Championship campaign in mind.

Gayle has scored 46 goals across his last two seasons in the second tier. So if Newcastle do go down, Bruce may be hoping that he can replicate something like that form once again.

But that possibility does not mean that Magpies fans will be excited about a 31-year-old closer to the periphery of the squad getting a new three-year contract.
