Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have been dealt a blow in their hopes of signing Sven Botman, with Calciomercato. It reporting that the defender’s agents have told AC Milan that they are his preferred club this summer.

The Magpies wanted Botman during the January transfer window. Meanwhile, reports last week claimed that Tottenham are interested in the Dutchman at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old missed out on moving to Tyneside last month due to Lille’s £46 million asking price.

However, it would appear that Milan have stolen a march on their rivals for his signature.

Calciomercato. It reports that the Rossoneri have met with Botman’s agents today. And two things were established.

Firstly, Milan have made Botman their number one defensive target. Meanwhile, the youngster wants to move to San Siro.

In fact, it is suggested that personal terms have already been agreed. He will earn around £49,000-a-week should he join Milan.

Calciomercato. It adds that there is great confidence that Milan will agree a deal with Lille. The two clubs apparently have an excellent relationship.

Setback for Tottenham and Newcastle if they see Botman join Milan

Clearly, it would appear that Milan are in pole position. And missing out on Botman would be a blow for the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle.

He looks to be a fantastic prospect. Jose Fonte previously described him as a ‘machine‘. And given his age, he is only going to get better.

Both Tottenham and Newcastle have the potential to offer Botman a much more lucrative deal. And that may give them hope.

Tottenham certainly need to strengthen their defence. Cristián Romero has impressed of late. But they have now lost four of their last seven.

Another centre-back would have been the icing on the cake for Newcastle in January. And should they stay up, convincing their top targets to come to St James’ Park should become much easier.

They will hope that it is not too late to convince Botman to snub the chance to join Milan.
