Mohamed Salah is yet to sign a new contract at Liverpool and The Athletic share what the Egyptian really thought about FSG president Mike Gordon’s last offer.

Salah has undoubtedly been Liverpool’s main man since he joined the club from Roma in the summer of 2017. He has played 254 times for Liverpool, scored 156 goals and provided 63 assists in all competitions since, which is a sensational record for a winger.

The Egyptian will enter the final year of his contract soon and there has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding his future. Salah has made it clear that he will stay beyond the end of this summer, but what happens next year is anyone’s guess.

What Mo Salah thought about Liverpool’s last contract offer

The report claims that it’s Gordon who has been leading the negotiations with Salah’s agent Remy Abbas about a new contract – not Michael Edwards or Julian Ward.

The two reportedly met in Miami in December, and that was when they found out there was ‘a vast disparity between what one party wanted and what the other was willing to offer’. A revised set of demands was then sent via email hoping to find an agreement, but to this day, there’s none.

The report claims that Liverpool’s last contract offer was a 15 per cent increase on his current salary of £200,000-a-week, which means he was offered a £30,000 more than what he’s on, which doesn’t seem like a lot for a player of his quality.

On seeing the offer, Salah and his camp reportedly felt that the new terms ‘under-valued’ the Egyptian’s status in world football.

Salah demands

Salah is definitely among the best players in world football. He finished last campaign with 31 goals and 16 assists in all competitions, which is just outstanding – especially when you consider that he had a really poor second half of the season.

Liverpool’s last offer is clearly not something Salah’s camp are willing to agree on. They want their client to be paid a similar salary to other world-class players of his level in Europe.

The report hasn’t revealed the exact figure Salah is demanding, but it has been claimed that the 29-year-old wants to become the sixth-best paid player in world football.

Before Kylian Mbappe signed his hugely lucrative deal, the sixth-highest paid footballer in the world was Gareth Bale at Real Madrid, who pocketed £500,000-a-week. (SportBible)

If the report is to be believed, Liverpool will have to match that to keep Salah at the club beyond the end of next season, which will not be easy considering that their current highest earner is Virgil van Dijk, who makes £220,000-a-week – less than half of what the Egyptian reportedly wants.
