Report: West Ham make enquiry to sign one of Italy's Euro 2020 champions
Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims on his website that West Ham United have made an enquiry to sign Domenico Berardi. The Sassuolo wide man was crucial in Italy’s Euro 2020 win, having starred for his club in 2020-21. Now, a move to England is on the cards and West Ham are keen.
Berardi, 26, remains at Sassuolo despite coming through the academy with the Serie A side. He has 291 appearances to his name at senior level, but easily enjoyed his best season in 2020-21. Playing 30 of Sassuolo’s 38 league games, Berardi scored a whopping 17 goals and laid on eight assists.
That form came from the right flank – and since then, he impressed at Euro 2020. Winning Euro 2020, Liverpool are also reportedly keen on the attacker. But now, Pedulla claims West Ham have made an enquiry while both Chelsea and Dortmund are keen. The price tag? £34million.
Do West Ham stand a chance of signing Berardi?
It largely depends on the seriousness of Chelsea or Dortmund. While he has been a proper servant to Sassuolo, he is hardly going to win trophies with the Serie A club and he needs to go. Certainly, he has Champions League quality – proof in that Chelsea and Dortmund want to sign him.
But he should only consider Chelsea if he will start. He will at Dortmund, after they just sold Jadon Sancho – but would he prefer England over a move to Germany? If so, he might stand more of a chance of starting at West Ham than Chelsea. But the Hammers are not favourites.
The move is a very ambitious one given the calibre of player, and also, given the Hammers owners.
