Report: West Ham have now made their move for striker Zinedine Zidane has called 'very good'

West Ham United have held talks over the signing of striker Giovanni Simeone from Serie A outfit Hellas Verona.

90Min report that the Hammers have made their first move over bringing the son of the Atletico Madrid manager to the London Stadium.

There have been discussions with intermediaries as West Ham continue their search for cover and competition for Michail Antonio.

It was reported earlier this month that Arsenal are looking at Simeone as a potential alternative if they cannot sign Gabriel Jesus.

West Ham hold talks over Simeone

As per Transfermarkt, Simeone scored 17 goals last season from 36 Serie A appearances, and also laid on six assists for teammates.

That said, the contrasting fortunes of Romelu Lukaku at Inter Milan and Chelsea may offer a note of caution over signing strikers from Serie A and expecting them to replicate their numbers in England.

On the other hand, Simeone is a player with great potential and none other than Zinedine Zidane has spoken highly of his ability.

“Giovanni has been very good,” Tribal Football quoted. “I’m happy for him. I really like him as a footballer.”

It is not clear how much West Ham are looking at paying for the hitman, who is 26, so should be approaching his peak years soon.

They have shown themselves unwilling to pay over the odds for a new frontman despite their need for one being so obvious and acute.

European football is back in east London next season and they will need increased attacking depth, but it remains to be seen whether Simeone will be the man to provide it.
